THE CITY IN RELIEF

Heidelberg, layer by layer.

The old town, the bridge and the wooded slopes sit so close together that you recognise Heidelberg by its silhouette alone.

A medieval city structure meets baroque façades, with the castle on the slope above. Heidelberg’s university was founded in 1386; the Old Bridge in red sandstone standing today was built between 1786 and 1788.

What the relief keeps is what you actually recognise: the bend of the river, the lanes of the old town and the castle on the slope.

FROM MAP TO OBJECT

How your relief is made.

The motif is fixed, but every piece is still printed and framed one at a time — here in Heidelberg.

01

Topography

We keep the contours, the river and the street plan, and leave out whatever makes the picture noisy.

02

Relief

The printer lays down layer after layer until the terrain has real height. Every piece is then checked by hand.

03

Framing

All that is left to choose is size and frame — the Heidelberg motif stays exactly as it is.
